Definition - Tone

Definition:

Web Definition:
Tone is the overall lightness or darkness of an area of an image, similar in the meaning to "luminosity".

My Definition:
Tone is when you make an image just two types of colour.

Accent,
Inflection,
Strength,
Force,
Stress,
Tonality,
Intonation.
One thing that can be tone can do to a photo is make it more interesting. If the colours in the photo are do not match up or are not very nice then you can change the tone of the photo to black and white and can manage to save the photo.

By removing colour from an image it draws attention to the main focus point of the image itself, for example in this photo because the tone is now black and white your eyes follow the stones to the point of interest which is the lighthouse. It also makes the photo look like it is older then it is.

When using tone in an image it doesn't always have to be black and white it can also be orange. This makes the image look a lot older because some of the fist colour cameras would only print out orange, This creates a nice affect because it makes you notice the whole photo and not just the main focus of a photo.

Tone can also distort your view on an image, for example the above photo looks like a crack in a tree trunk and also looks like a gaping hole in the Earth, because there is only two colours used it is hard to tell what it is so it leaves it to the viewer to determine what they think it is.
