Definition - Depth

Definition:

Web Definition:
Depth is the distance from the top or the surface to the bottom of something.

My Definition:
Depth is when you start at a point of large area and as your eye follows it down it gets smaller.

Bottom,
Base,
Drop,
Pit,
Pitch,
Sounding,
Measure,
Intensity.
In this image we can see that the there are three areas of depth that are happening. There are the two side depths and the floor depth. This makes a cube like image which shows us that the depth of an image can be from anywhere in a photo. By using this technique we can use the depth to draw the viewer to a significant point in the image, for example in this one the depth takes us to the background tree.

This image shows depth because as we can see in the definition it is distance from the top of an image to the bottom of an image.  Depth does not always have to be from the bottom of an image going along it can be form the side to the middle of an image like the one from above.
The effect of depth doesn't always have to be on and inanimate object the effect of depth of an object can also be achieved with a human or animal subject like in the photo above. In this photo the photographer has chosen an angle in where the head of the girl is in focus and the rest of her is not this draws attention to the key point of the image which is her head and then you follow her body down to her feet because of the effect of depth in this image.

In this image the photographer has manged to get two aspects of depth within this image. They have got the depth from the poles going along and have a depth going along the poles from the birds. This shows us the two basic structure of the world which are biological and man made in and image and because they are repeated like in a pattern it shows that both are never ending.

Work Dairy - Depth

Evaluation:

Depth is the distance from the top of a surface to the bottom of a surface. What I enjoyed about this section of the session was going to different areas to take photos that to me represent depth. I think that depth and perspective have a lot in common. My photos they all worked out really well.
This image has a real depth to it. By using a wide aperture  both the foreground and the background are in focus. I also turned the image ion its side to give an interesting feel to the shot. At first glance the wall looks like a pavement. Its not until you study the shot that you realise that its actually a wall.

The thing I like about this is how it starts of small and then gets narrower and narrower until it seems to disappear into bushes at the back of the picture. I would like to do this with more photos because I like how it sort of disappears into the background.

Progression:

If I were to continue this then I would try to get some photos of depth in unusual place and in some unusual circumstances. For example I would like to get a photo of depth that went either in to a heavily forested area or in to a misty area or both of them put together.

The thing I like about this photo is that it has cherry blossom in
it which is my favourite and it also covers an old rusted bridge
that disappears of into to the cherry blossom with the effect of depth.

The thing I like about his photo is how the woodland pathway
is circular and how it has a circular depth to it. I also like
how the trees contain the are of depth so it does't get out of
control.

Image Bank - Depth

In each of these photos the foreground stands out the most, which helps emphasize the depth of the image. This is because you firstly notice the foreground then your eye scans along the image and gives you the effect of depth of the image coming to a point. When taking a photo to indicate depth the angle of the camera is important, because with most photographs that indicate depth the angle of the camera must be elevated from the line of depth you want so you get that nice effect of the line getting smaller. For example in the images bellow all of the photographers have taken their picture from an elevated position as to get the effect wanted. this also allows for more of the background to be in the image which also emphasizes the narrowness of the lines as you get closer to the background of the image.

In this image the photographer took the photo from the center of the road, which really helps to demonstrate the depth of the photograph. As we move along the the middle of the image we can see the depth of the image the line in the middle of the image shows the viewer the the direction the depth goes in. This image is a rather interesting image because using a road to depict depth is actually a rather clever thing to do because it is one of the easiest to do and also is one of the only images that can show depth across the whole length of the image because of the lines in the road and the road itself.
In this photograph the photographer decided to take a photo of a railed bench. This image gives us 9 straight lines giving the same depth effect and all of the rails merge into one which illiterates the depth of the image. The great thing about this image is that the there is also two extra views of depth. We have a depth going along the wall which goes along and meets in the same place as the rail. There is also a depth on the building that isn't as effective as the other two but it is still there as you go along the left hand side buildings.
In this image we can see that the photographer decided to take a photo of a bridge in the forest. In this image i like that there are 3 different start points for when depth can start, because you have the effect of depth coming from the walkway and the two railings which give it a more three dimensional feel to it.
In this image we can see that there is a curve in the straight lines, but as you can see this does not effect the depth of the image. What I like about this  photograph is that it leads the eye into the image and off to the right. There is only a small area that in in focus and this adds to the interest. The depth of the rail curve to the right and the depth happens closer to the bottom of the image is rather interesting.
In this image we can see that depth can work on anything no matter what size it is or in which direction the lines are going. This is a rather interesting thing because using an instrument is rather interesting way to represent the depth of a line. I like how they have a different direction for the depth then the normal ones which go though the middle of the image whereas this one goes to the left of the image.

This image is a lot like the other image of a bridge but this bridge has a greater depth to it and the main focus is only on the bridge itself because the background is plain so the focus is only on the bridge and it's depth.
