Research On Eddie Adams

Eddie Adams:

The reason I choose this photographer was because he took lots of controversial images of the Vietnamese war. He has both photos of American soldiers, Vietnamese soldiers and images of Vietnamese people in his images as well which makes his photographs fairly unique. He also captures some very gruesome images of what happened to some people during this war.

Eddie Adams worked for Associated Press in the  Vietnam War when he took his best-known photograph. General Nguyễn Ngọc Loan shot a Vietcong prisoner, Nguyễn Văn Lém, on a Saigon street, on February 1, 1968. The reason I like this image is because it shows one of the things that was viewed as acceptable during this time and also shows how terrible the war actually was.
In this photo we see Eddie Adams  photos of other combat photographers preparing to go out on a mission with the platoon they were attached to.

Here we see that Eddie Adams has taken a photo of  a bound Vietnamese soldier who looks like he is about to be taken to an American outpost to be interrogated by the USA army.

This image is rather interesting because I have seen the description of this photo form both a Vietnamese perspective and a westerner perspective and they are both very different. The Vietnamese perspective is it is an image of an American death squad entering a village to kill the inhabitants. Where as the westerner perspective is it is American solders saving a village from a Vietnamese raid.
In this image we see that Eddie Adams has managed to capture an image of a drill sergeant shouting at a
soldier about something. This was done to break a soldiers civilian mind set.
One of the brilliant things about all of Eddie Adams is they are all an excellent example of tone. All of the image where taken in black and white which means they have lost all of their colour information. Either way I think that this makes the images stand out to the audience. This is because by getting rid of the colour of the image it allows the viewer to fill in the blanks in their mind which makes the image rather interesting because it becomes a sort of game. Filling in the image is rather easy because Eddie is very good at capturing emotion which means it makes it rather easy for people to find out what would have been happening when the photo was taken.

This photographer has influenced me to try and get photos in black and white, this is because in Eddie Adams work he uses the absents of colour to show the emotion of the people within the images. The reason this is a good technique is because without the distraction of colour people can focus more on the facial expressions of the people involved in the photo and can see more easily how they react to their surrounds. It also makes it easier to take a photo because light is less of a need for this type of photography because it is black and white and sort of auto does it which means if you see a good emotional image you can quickly take it.

In summary this photographer is very good at capturing peoples emotion and what peoples after emotion would be. This is known because the emotion captured is so strong you can tell what their emotion dirrecly after it would be. This is a rather impressive technique that he does very well with all his work and would be a hard thing to try and repeat.

Research On Larry Burrows

Larry Burrows:
The reason I have chosen to do Larry Burrows is because I find his work he did in Vietnam to be inspiring and think his work is great. My favourite of his work is called "Reaching Out". His work shows the emotion of all the solders that he has captured and he mangoes to capture the respect that people had for these solders because of the way he manges to capture the solders on photo.

In this photo that Larry Burrows captured we see some solders who have either just set fire to someones house, just walking past someones house or have seen the house burning and have saved them which it seems to be because they have some civilians near them.
In this image we see some solders who are cheering because their evacuation team has just come to pick them up and take them back to base after a battle. We can see that some solders are cheering while others are sitting on the ground maybe thinking about what they have just done.
Here in this image we can see that Larry Burrows has captured the happy expression of a solder as they go off into battle with his machine gun in hand and ready to fire at his enemies.
Here we have an image of a large group of solders after what seems to be a helicopter crash. Here we can see the devastation to both the solders and the landscape that the plan crash has had on them.

Larry Burrows is another example of a photographer that uses tone in his photographs. I like how in the above photo. In this we see that he took the photo in black and white and also managed to capture the dust that was put up in the crash. This makes the image look a lot darker and also adds a new level of detail to the image which makes it a rather amazing image.

This photographer has influenced me to try and get more controversial  image and to get into the thick of the image I am trying to capture. This is because all of his photos can be viewed as controversial. He also gets in the thick of his photos by getting up close and personal with the object he is photographing. His type of controversial photo would be people in the act of killing the way I used his work to influence me is instead of getting a photo of someone in the act of killing I decided to take a photo of the aftermath of a war that happened a long time ago.

I have lots of respect for this photographer because he went in to Vietnam at a dangerous time and took lots of amazing photos that showed how just how dangerous it was and he also showed the emotions felt by the people he photographed.

Research On Henri Cartier-Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson:

The reason I have chosen to do my research on Henri Cartier-Bresson is because he takes photos from the beginning of life to the end of life and everything in-between. His work shows creativity and shows how he has managed to capture the emotion of the people he has photographed. He also does most of his images in black and white which takes focus away from the background and brings focus onto the foreground.
In this image we see another one of Henri's movement images were a man is jumping over a puddle while a couple are getting intimate in the background.

The reason I have chosen this photo is because it shows what the working class were like and how they formatted themselves in Paris during this time.
I choose this image because it contrasts the image above it because it shows a clear difference in class. As we can see she is in the upper class of society and this shows the difference between the bottom and  the top.

Here we see a couple are asleep together, this image shows us that even during this time a couple can still be together and show their  affection towards each other.
Henri Cartier-Bresson uses tone in his work in a fairly basic way but in a way that is effective on the audience. He uses tone to try and separate out the work class from the upper class which actually works because be removing the colour it makes them less different. Even though you can still tell the difference between the classes it is still an effective technique which works well to engage the audience.

This photographer has influenced me to look at a possible image and think about its whole lifespan from creation to destruction and find inventive ways to incorporate that into my photograph. He has also inspired me to look at both sides of an image both the visual and the metal side of the image. The photo I think best shows how he has inspired me is a wedding photo because it shows the start of a new life that two people will be sharing with each other.

Overall this photographer has inspired me to get more photos of lifespans and to try and achieve photos of lifespan and to capture both sides of the potential image. I like most of his work even though some images are controversial but I think that it works with his overall theme.

Research On Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams:

The thing I like about Ansel Adams is his unique ability to inject so much drama in his images.  He does wait for the best sky's and the right time of day to get the shadows right but every photo has dark and light areas but his images take this to a new level. What I find inspiring about his works is he always manages to get such a range of tones that appear to be unachievable by other photographers. His black and white landscapes are just amazing.

The thing I really like about this photo is it looks like the mountain is being eaten by the cloud. It looks like a bomb blast. I also like the contrast between the movement of the sky and the stillness of the mountain.
In this photo I like how the shadow of a cloud is making its way across the canyon and there are only a few areas that still have light reaching them.
In this photo I like how the lake looks like mercury and the mountain look like they are shrouded in mist.
In this photo I like how the sky looks like a stormy sea above the mountain and how the contrast of black and white make the mountain  look bigger then it is.
Ansel Adams is very good at using tone to show the detail. This goes against what the viewer would think because we would think that you can't have much detail without colour but somehow proves us wrong because he mange to show the detail of the landscapes in his photos.

This photographer has influenced me in to trying to get as much detail as possible without using colour. I have tried this with lots of my photos to see if they work and have posted what I think are the best photos. He is also very good at getting the overall feel of the image and how you would feel if you were there.I have used this in my work by making an image of a landscape into black and white and showing more detail that can only be found in black and white like Ansel Adams images.

This photographer is very good at managing to capture the raw strutter and layout of a natural beauty and still some how does that even though most of his work except for when he experimented with colour is in black and white.

Research On Robert Capa

Robert Capa:

The reason I have chosen Robert Capa as one of my photographers is because he manages to capture peoples emotion and movement in all of his photos which I think is a very good skill. I find he work to be very appealing to me because he has lots of war photos and I think that he has represented the people in those photo as good hardworking people who are trying to end a war, he also manages to capture peoples emotion of being there and what the future may hold.

Here we can see some Asian children having a snowball fight and we can also see that Robert Capa has managed to capture their happiness in the photo even though there is a war going. This image shows that even if there is a war the children can escape from the horror and enjoy themselves.
In this photo we see a wounded solider being bandaged up after an incident.  The thing to think about with this photo is that after that he probably had to go straight back to where he got that injury and had to face the horror of war again.
In this image we can see how grateful the people were to the soldiers because here we have a french farming offering cider to American soldiers about to fight in another battlefield to liberate some more of that persons home country.
In this image we can see the horror of the storm at Normandy and we can see some of the people who were shot down still floating next to their living friends. This image just shows  the horror of storming the beaches.
Robert Capa is an excellent example of movement and tone in photos. Robert takes a still image of people in movement without blur and also uses a black and white tone. His use of tone adds to the affect of the movement in his images. The photos he takes are still image but you can tell where and what type of movement everyone in the image would have made directly after the photo was taken.

This photographer has influenced me to try to get photos of some types of atrocity and find photos of people in the middle of it trying to make a difference. This is because in lots of his photos he takes he takes photos of the bad for example people dying in WWII but also takes photos of people with nothing giving stuff to solders who are fighting for them to have freedom. In my work influenced by Robert Capa I have included images that show people wanting freedom and signs of freedom.

To summarise this photographer is good at managing to capture movement in the photo and his photos are good at telling the story that happened before the photo was taken and what happened after it was taken. I think that this is a very good trait in a photo because it makes the viewer more interested in the photo.
