Work Diary - Pattern

Evaluation:
I enjoyed this project. Searching for patterns in and around the college grounds there was a lot to choose from.  It's not until you start top look hard that actually there are patterns to everything we look at. Both on a large and small scale. The main section I enjoyed was editing the photos and changing the levels within the photo.

I liked the pattern of these paving slabs. In a way the pattern is constantly changing as the moss and dirt sits in the crevices  so over time this will look more and more different. I think if I got lower this shot would have been more dramatic.

This pattern we see the world over. In buildings or paving slabs the pattern is the same but the use of different types of brick are infinite so within the structure of the overlapping pattern there is an infinite variety and look to the finished result. The edge of my foot in this gives the viewer some scale but looking at this now I would probably either crop my foot totally out or include my whole shoe. It looks a bit ill-considered as is.

Progression:

If I were to continue this section of the course I would have liked to continue my theme of brickwork and the variety of patterns you can make in bricks.  It would be nice to balance this with patterns in nature as below.

This is a good photograph because the photographer has been able to isolate the image of the butterfly on a neutral background so that the natural pattern of the butterfly is all that you see. The pattern is amazing and I think is designed to scare away animals that might eat the butterfly.

Here we see the skyline of a Japanese city. For me the skyline creates a pattern. Even though it may not look like it is patterned because there are both large monolithic building an small building it creates a pattern within the skyline. Now even though this is a hard thing to do the photographer has successfully managed to achieve this with minimal effort. If you look closely every building also has repeat patterns in the windows and shape of every floor. Its is a very uniform pattern where as in nature patterns tend to be more irregular.

Definition - Pattern

Definition:

Web Definition:
A repeated colour or design.

My Definition:
A design, colour or object that is repeated multiple times.

Arrangement,
Device,
Diagram,
Guide,
Mold,
Plan,
Decoration,
Trim.

Patterns do not always have to be the same shape repeated over and over again, a pattern can be a type of object that is repeated multiple times, for example the image above is a pattern of rocks. The rocks themselves are not all the same but because they are all rocks and have been repeated it means they are a pattern and the photographer has seen this and decided to capture this type of pattern.

In this image we can see that the photographer has taken a picture of a bee honey comb. This pattern shows that all life in the world work with some form of order and the photographer has captured that in this image by showing the hexagons in this photo as a pattern which is a structure

Here we see a photographer has taken a photo of a pattern create by man. This shows pattern shows that the human race works with order not random patterned structures like nature. The photographer shows us this by managing to capture an image of man kinds OSD for order and not random structures.

Patterns are found throughout the world we can find them in biological creature like a zebra above. This pattern shows us that it isn't just mankind that can create a patterned structure but also nature can as well. This photographer is trying to show the detail that nature puts into her designs when creating pattern and this photographer has capture one of these patterns in a photograph.

Image Bank - Pattern

These six images bellow all show different patterns, there can be both patterns in nature and patterns that are man-made. Most of the patterns I have found are man-made but there are still lots of patterns that can be found throughout in nature. A pattern is a repeating unit of something that forms decretive design which follows a basic sequence which then form the pattern. A pattern will normally follow a specific order which will then form a patten. An example would be the woven design bellow.

Here we see a woven pattern of a basket that a photographer has taken. This pattern is made up of strains of wood all woven together to form a basket with a nice pattern in the progress. The pattern seen here is rather basic because we can easily identify it. The pattern in this is the strips of wood layered on top of each other.

Here a photographer ha taken a load of marbles and lined them up in a pattern, all of them are green except one which is red which makes the pattern stand out.

In this the photographer has overlapped lots of tyres to make another woven pattern like the basket above.

Here are the over lapping pattern found on a peacocks feathers. This pattern has been adapted by nature to make the peacock look bigger and fierce to any predators. The photographer who has taken this photo has done a close-up of the feathers.

Here is a pattern of the top of a load of large lead pencils all lined up to form a wonderful pattern going along it.  In this we see the top at different angles because of the pattern. This makes it rather interesting because the pattern causes a pattern of its own.

In this image we see multiple formal elements. The first is colour which in the image we have red and green which add to make the image brighter. We also have shape in the image where the petals are diamond shaped, because of this shape it causes the image to have a pattern and also has a pattern where all the petals point towards the centre of the flower.
